Everyone wants to turn heads
It’s no secret that everyone wants to create attention-grabbing content. Half of a good campaign is finding that special hook. When it comes to immersive, experiential content, 360 video has emerged as an effective, accessible, and relatively affordable form of video!
360 video empowers creatives to place viewers inside literally any environment they choose. Want to do a video on the deck of an aircraft carrier? Done. Want to film a stretch of The Great Wall of China? Easy. Want to make a video from the perspective of a stunt cage motorcyclist? No problem.
360 video will make heads turn. But most people don’t understand the technology behind it. How does 360 video work?
Put yourself into the action
First, let’s take a look at an example of 360 video. Ever imagine what it’d be like to fly in a F-18 hornet with the US Navy’s infamous Blue Angels? Well, now see it for yourself instead:
This video is made with a special camera apparatus. Modern 360 cameras, like our own Insta360 Pro, tend to be spherical in shape. They look a bit like alien spacecrafts, to be honest. There are six lenses on the Insta360 Pro, which point outward in all directions around the center of the camera. Each camera captures a sliver of the area surrounding the camera, which we then “stitch” together into a cohesive image of the environment around the camera.
This is what allows us to capture all 360 degrees of the pilot’s cockpit. It gives users an opportunity to look anywhere they want. In the old days, it was hard to see what the stitch would look like in the end, but 360 cameras today can generate stitches in real time, which we then clean up in post-production. It’s just another way that this amazing tech is improving, every day.
This awesome video from Double Robotic is another great example of 360 video in action:
Staying up to date in the space
We’ve done work for the Georgia Department of Education, American Girl, feature trailers. We can also do a 360 fisheye. Or heck, even a double-fisheye! You name it, we’ve done it.
And the best part? With 360 video you don’t have to worry about missing the shot. The camera captures almost every angle, so if there’s action around it, the numerous lenses will pick it up.
When you pair 360 video stitching with binaural audio, you’ve got a pretty nifty setup. You can read more about binaural audio here. (LINK TO BINAURAL AUDIO BLOG)
The thing about 360 video is the game changes literally every month. The technology is still relatively new and evolving at a rapid pace. You need a 360 video production company who knows the space, knows the tech and has a proven track record with the biggest brands in the world.
ECG Productions is dedicated to staying on top of the latest best practices, newest gear and hottest trends in the VR video and 360 video space.
Stitching together some great content
Like all video, creating a 360 experience is much more than just point, shoot, and voilà you have a video. More often than not, bringing 360 to life involves a bit of what’s called video stitching. 360 video stitching is the process of digitally combining lat-long video files to create one seamless 360 image. For lack of a better term it’s literally “stitching” together separate video files to create one big one that the audience can view in full panoramic splendor.
360 video stitching is a laborious and meticulous process that demands attention to detail. One single mis-stitch and the entire illusion of 360 falls away in an instant. However, as the technology of the 360 space has evolved more and more 360 cameras have gained in-camera stitching capabilities. That doesn’t mean the stitching is perfect, though; there’s always room for error, even from top of the line equipment. But even with little imperfections littered throughout, this advancement makes the 360 video editors job WAY easier, and greatly reduces the video stitching hours needed to edit together a jaw-dropping spot.
